Born in Buenos Aires to a Catalan father and an Italian mother, Alberto Ginastera is widely considered to be one of the most important 20th century composers of classical music in the Americas. Ginastera was inspired greatly by the gaucho tradition of Argentina. The gaucho, loosely related to the American cowboy, was an expert horseman and adept at working cattle. The traditional Malambo is danced by a solo male gaucho wearing boots. The Danza Final from Estancia is a classic example of the wildness and freedom with which the gaucho dances the Malambo.
